TOA FOUNDATION
Inclusive Tourism. Meaningful Employment. Lasting Impact.
Arm 3: TOA Foundation – Community Support & Social Impact Arm
Core Offering:
The community support and social impact arm of Tour Operators Academy. TOA Foundation has two distinct functions:
- Employment & Training: Training marginalized groups (women, youth, PWDs, elderly) for meaningful jobs in tourism
- Inclusive Safaris for Vulnerable Travelers: Enabling elderly, persons with disabilities, and those with limited mobility to experience safaris as travelers – often subsidized or donor-funded
Our Philosophy: Not charity. We create skilled, employable individuals who add value to tourism businesses. Not quick fixes. We focus on sustainable employment and long-term career growth. Not alone. We work through partnerships with government, development organizations, and the private sector. And we believe that vulnerable individuals deserve to experience the magic of a safari, not just work in tourism.
Function 1: Employment & Training
The Problem We Solve: Tourism is growing rapidly across Africa, yet women, youth, persons with disabilities, and the elderly remain largely excluded from its benefits. They possess talent, passion, and local knowledge but lack tourism-specific skills, industry connections, and access to employment opportunities.
Our Solution – “Tourism Skills for Inclusive Employment”
- Train: Free or subsidized tourism training for marginalized groups tailored to their strengths
- Link: Connect trained participants directly to employment with lodges, tour operators, and hospitality businesses
- Market: Promote inclusive tourism as a unique selling point for participating businesses
| Group | Why We Focus on Them | Example Roles |
|---|---|---|
| Women | Underrepresented in guiding and leadership roles | Safari guides, kitchen management, guest relations, sales & marketing |
| Youth | Lack experience and industry connections | Junior guides, reservations agents, digital marketing assistants |
| Persons with Disabilities | Face physical and attitudinal barriers to employment | Administrative roles, artisan production, tour operations support |
| Elderly | Possess deep cultural knowledge but face age discrimination | Cultural storytellers, traditional craft instructors, heritage consultants |
Employer Benefits for Hiring TOA Foundation Graduates: Access to vetted, trained staff; marketing advantage through “Inclusive Tourism” certification; loyal workforce with unique community connections; demonstrable contribution to sustainable tourism.
Function 2: Inclusive Safaris
The Problem We Solve: Most safari vehicles, lodges, and itineraries are not designed for elderly travelers, persons with disabilities, or those with limited mobility. As a result, millions of vulnerable individuals are excluded from experiencing Africa's wildlife and natural beauty.
Our Solution – “Inclusive Safaris”
TOA Foundation organizes and facilitates safaris specifically designed for vulnerable individuals.
| Traveler Type | Specific Considerations |
|---|---|
| Elderly travelers | Slower pacing, comfortable vehicles, easy-access accommodations, medical support |
| Persons with physical disabilities | Wheelchair-accessible vehicles, accessible lodges, trained guides, portable ramps |
| Travelers with limited mobility | Shorter walking distances, assistance where needed, adaptive equipment |
| Visually impaired travelers | Audio descriptions, tactile experiences, specialized guiding |
| Hearing impaired travelers | Visual guides, written materials, sign language interpretation where available |
What TOA Foundation Provides: Accessible Vehicles, Accessible Accommodations, Trained Guides, Subsidized Rates, Medical Support, and Customized Itineraries.
How Travelers Access Safaris: Self-funded (subsidized non-commercial pricing), Donor-sponsored, Partner-referred, Group Inclusive Safaris.
